The Alberta Stiga Table Hockey Championships V will take place at Centre Stage (The Bay) in West Edmonton Mall on Saturday, February 6, 2010.

We will begin at 9:30 am. One or two initial rounds will be played for a total of around 28-30 pre-playoff games. Playoffs all best-of-sevens in all Pools. This a Player's Choice tournament. As in ETHL tournaments in the past, schedules are set up so that there are minimum figure changes between games (one overall change per round robin) and scores are kept by each player on his scoresheet, so you'll get the maximum amount of games in a minimum of time!

Tentative schedule:
9:30 - 12:30 First round robin
12:30 - 1:15 Lunch break
1:15 - 2:30 Second round robin
2:30 - 3:15 Break
3:15 - 7:00 Playoffs and award ceremony

Entry fee is $15 and participation is open to anyone - Albertan or not. There will be 3 (or 4) pools, with trophies for the top 3 finishers of each division. Last year, we had 27 participants.

This is a player's choice tournament. NHL players may use Inter goalies. All player figures (NHL and Inter) will be supplied, but you may bring your own teams, if you wish, to use only in the Playoffs. The ETHL timer and face-off rule will be used. All games are cleaned with diluted Original Windex, have Suplaks, Lyle Knittig net deflectors, pledged rods, oiled slots and 'Tack it Over' on the rod pegs. This tournament is not part of the CTHA/USTHA North American Stiga Tour.

The Oilers are not playing that weekend, but do host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, February 3.

Thanks, guys!
It was a good news-bad news day.
Bad news: We only had 13 participants - our lowest total since our first Alberta Championships in 2006 when we had 12 players. Unfortunately, none of the Calgary players could make it.
Plus, not everyone wants to commit a whole day to playing table hockey. In the past (for the Centennial tournament) I have thought of having a smaller 2-3 hour secondary tournament for guys who don't want to spend the whole day. I am just afraid that the smaller tournament would detract from the main event - we might end up having 20 players for the smaller event and 15 players for the day-long tourney. On the other hand, the total number of players would look good to the media! Do you guys have any thoughts?? I have explained to some of the players that the major tournaments are set up to be day-long events and that there is a reason why the ITHF awards double or triple tournament points to these events.

Good news: Wade Hopfe and Joaquin Kenyon joined the league and we are now up to 30 paid members for the season - our 3rd consecutive season with 30 or more paid members. We usually pick up a couple of players after the February tournament and this year we have had a few enquiries.
In the past year, I have also found out that 2 elementary schools have Stiga leagues in Edmonton. One school was destroyed by fire, but I contacted the other school and offered to set up a 2-3 hour junior tournament at the next Centennial. The person I spoke to thought that around 20 kids would be interested in playing.
Also, Bill Rothery of our league is involved with Boy Scouts and wants to set up a Stiga night there.

That is good news, Reg. Don't be afraid to experiment or try new ways to do things. Sometimes the efforts amount to nothing, but sometimes a person hits on something that works that we could all learn from.

Reggie;

Not any hard data or anything, but I knew a few buddies in the Ottawa region that would have played a half day. The main reason was family. They could not afford to invest an entire day to TH.
