I see Detroit is seeing some upsets of varying proportions.

Early Playoffs
Surprised to see:
Mecca (Philadelphia), who has played a few seasons of #5380 in the NYCTHA, ousted by Farwell (Chicago).

Paul Brotz (Detroit) 7-9-1 finished lower than Bob Ingo (Chicago) 9-7-1 after two rounds, but came on strong to defeat Bob, a past US Open Champion 2008(?). Strong effort Paul.

Somewhat surprised:
Steve Bernstein (Boston) defeats Bernd Kunzler, (Toronto/Hamilton area). Kunzler who has quite a bit of more "recent" #5380 tournament experience e.g. Quebec, and finished top 3 in Detroit a couple years back. But, he seems to have struggled on the day finishing the first two round robins rather low for his capability. Both are experienced veterans of multiple tables and tournaments.


Middle Rounds

With Bob Ingo, Chicago's top finisher in the double round robin, out of the playoffs, Chicago's hope for a tournament winner rests with Jeff Thill. He delivered by drawing first blood on Toronto's (Mississauga) Dave Kraehling, handing him his first defeat of the day in Game 1 of the Semi-Finals.

I see Kraehling (Toronto) didn't take kindly to his defeat and thumps Jeff (Chicago) 19-4 combined in the next three games.

Dave, often goes down in a series but has the knack to quickly analyze what would work and implements it successfully against his opponents.
