We're excited to announce the start of a long-awaited STIGA table hockey tournament in the Toronto area! The 2011 STIGA CANADA CUP will be a sanctioned event by the CTHA & USTHA, and sponsored by STIGA and the Toronto STIGA Table Hockey League.

When: Saturday, November, 26, 2011
Website: http://www.StigaCanadaCup.com/

CASH prizes ($500 1st; $200 2nd; $100 3rd), trophies, team packs and other STIGA merchandise will be awarded, in addition to a trophy for the best player 14 years of age and under. For early-round playoff losers, there will be a 2-on-2 team tournament and a '3-puck challenge' tournament for added value. Lunch is included in the entrance fee.

We appreciate anyone's support, participation and help in spreading the word about this tournament we hope to continue for many years to come. Thank you!

Hey congrats on getting things up and running, Eugene.

Toronto is a world-class city and it sounds like a well-planned event.

The web site looks great.

Posted a news item on the USTHA home page to help promote. Keep us posted on how things are going.

Now I'm scheming on how to get out of working that Friday so I can hop a flight to Toronto...that's the day after US Thanksgiving and I didn't ask for it off and now I'm in the back of the line. Apparently, the newspaper is not going to put out itself!

Best,
Eric

The 2-on-2 team competition is simply teams of two players vs. two players. On each team, one player uses the goalie, left-wing and left defence; the other player uses the center, right defence and right-wing. Five-minute games. Goals scored by a 'teamwork' pass from one player figure to another count as two goals.

The 3-puck challenge is a fun format whereby three pucks are dropped at center ice at the start. All pucks are always in play, and whenever a goal is scored, the puck must be ejected back into the rink immediately (back in play). If a puck leaves the rink, a center-ice face-off is done. Trick shots are allowed. The first player to reach 9 goals wins.

We're hoping these 'unconventional' formats will help add a lot of fun and a less serious environment for early-round losers. It will be interesting to see who excels in this type of play!

Congrats Eugene and Rick and Co.

Looks like you've already got a robust player list for your tournament.

I'm sure it will only grow in the weeks to come.

Best,
Eric

Hey everybody. I signed up last night to play in the Toronto tournament. Did a few favors at work and asked for the time off and got it.

I've been added to the player list...I listed myself as "advanced," which might be a bit generous on my part. Smile

Looking forward to what is shaping up as a fun event. After Bjarne or Anette beat me like a drum, figure I can get in on the doubles action.

A note to US players: please make sure your passport is updated. Believe we need it to go into Canada these days.

I checked mine this morning, and wouldn't ya know it, it expired in May. So I gotta send in a renewal application and pay an extra $60 for expedited service so I can (hopefully) get it back in time. The renewal fee was like $110 itself. Ugh...travel ain't cheap.

Wow -- the 2011 STIGA Canada Cup now boasts the participation of four high-profile dignitaries:

ITHF President, Bjarne Axelsen (advanced skill)
ITHF First Lady, Anette Engel (advanced skill)
CTHA President, John Cooke (intermediate skill)
USTHA President, Eric Kroll (quasi-advanced skill)

What is the protocol for welcoming and speaking to the top brass? I don't want to cause an international incident.

Thanks for asking Eugene;

Hosting one Presidential visit is complicated enough. Inviting three leaders spawns a labiryth of archaic protocol and haughty procedure.

For those who have never dealt with a Canadian leader, I have been asked this question numerous times so I might as well answer here again:

Q: Which fork do I use to eat my poutine? A: The plastic one.

… and as you are new to this privilege I will remind you that where the politicians travel the press trail behind. Beware as they are scallywags of the deepest dye. Don't offer them free food.

Print will be there. The Americans are sending a representative of one of their most venerable rags, The Chicago Tribune.

Radio will be there. The EU is sending a team. I think they have a deal worked out with Signal Hill and Marconi to get the word back to the old country.

And the Canadians, recognizing the political import of such a gathering, have sent a member of CPAC, Canada's answer to CSPAN.

As we are the host country, please remember that for the opening ceremonies it's The Maple Leaf Forever, played on the only real instrument, a bagpipe. Oh Canada is reserved for spontaneous moments. I suggest you take your cue from bar ruffians. They will let you know when the time is right.

And last and perhaps most importantly, after all the linens are ironed, the carpet laid and the band tuned up, remember to have fun with it. Pretend that we are just table hockey players.

I remember Claus, I think he came to Ottawa/Gatineau one year? Awesome addition!

... and yes Dan, security costs are huge, especially since I require all RCMP to wear the red serge.

Doktor Rinner finished third at the Rose Bowl some years ago. He will be a formidable opponent.

Saw an ad in the Chicago papers for Porter Airlines, having a sale to Toronto.

Not sure what cities this airline flies out of...seems to be mostly a Canadian thing, and flies out of Midway in Chicago and airports in New Jersey and Boston and South Carolina maybe in the states. I also seem to remember the airport in Toronto they fly out of has larger than you'd expect fees.

Anyway, the 50 percent off code is: FIVE50

That's right! Porter Airlines flies directly to/from the Toronto Island Airport (instead of the Toronto International Airport), which is just a 10-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto.

** The 50% OFF SALE is only valid if you book by November 4th. **

That would depend on how many games the series goes.
Typically there is about 30 - 60 seconds between finals competitions, but at some point one of the competitors needs to regroup and get a drink or hit the bathroom, etc. and there is always a mutual agreement to take a 5 min or so break.

Based on that, I'd say figure about 2 min in between on average.
In reality it's more like 45 sec, 30 sec, 5 min, 30 sec, 60 sec, 4 min, 45 sec.

Looking forward to the big Stiga tournament in the Toronto area next weekend.

Does anyone have any recommendations on good locally-brewed beer?

Erik;

I am not much of a drinker, but some of my local friends seem to like Steam Whistle. Others have raved about a brewmaster by the name of Duggan. I think his most popular brew is an IPA #9.

Only four more sleeps, and then you can try them for yourself.

Hello everyone. We'll try to post some results and photos and observations from this weekend's Stiga Canada Cup in Toronto. Assuming technology allows, will be using the USTHA Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/#!/USTableHockey

You don't have to be a Twitter user to see the information...just go to that page. Best, Eric
