The Canada Cup of Table Hockey is ON!
September 22nd 2012 and this time it will be a bit different. I am holding a team competition.
There will be a cap of 24 players.
The first round will be an individual competition but will determine rankings for the team competition.
In the morning we will all play for the right to have our name as an individual on the Canada Cup. 23 games will determine the champion. No second round, no playoffs*. The first round will determine the Champion. If there is a tie in points then one game will determine the champion. If by some fluke there are more than two at the top then wins then head to head will determine the top two who will playoff.
Maybe now is the time to say, I am a flexible guy and if you want to offer suggestions then NOW is the time. Game day is too late. Obviously who will come will determine a great deal, so let's all be patient.
After the individual round is over we will begin the Team competition. Each team will be made up of 3 players. The ranking of the teams will be place 1-8 depending on the total points accumulated by the 3 team members during the individual round. Team 1 vs team 8 2 vs 7 etc. All three players will play at once and these 3 games will constitute "a match". In each game there will be no ties and overtime will be used. The winner of this team match will have won the majority of these games. All rounds will be 4 of 7.
Depending on the ranking there will be a home team and a visitor. The home team gets last choice on where they will place their players. Or who they want to match up against. So lets say the home team is on tables A,B&C. The visitor will announce who will line up on their side of tables AB&C. Then the home team will decide who they want to line up at these same tables. Like the NHL the higher ranked team will get home ice for games 1,2,5,&7.
After the first round of this playoff format, the losing teams will go to a B side and continue on in the same format.
We will have an A and B champ, also a 4th place trophy for each division. One trophy per team.
The individual champ will get a trophy and their name on the Canada Cup.
I bet the next question is how do you form a team? Yes this could be a bit of mess. But if you get me three names and reserve your spot then you will be a team. I can see that it may take some juggling to get a team together, but I am confident that it will work out. Speaking of reservations there will be 2 spots saved for Team USA and Team Europe.
The cost per team will be $100 CND and profits will be split between the Ottawa Food Bank and the fund raising attempt to send Team Canada to the World Championships.
I don't believe this format will be sanctioned? I am breaking some rules so it's really not part of the tour. Also I did talk to Reggie about it so we are aware that the two tournaments are a week apart.
I realize that this is off the beaten track. Therefore I need to see some level of interest before Aug 1st. If there is no real interest then no need to go to all that effort. So if you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible.
That's all I can think of for now. Send you cards and letters for Questions? Comments? email johncooke@ctha.ca _________________ John Cooke

Over the next few weeks I will contact individuals and see if I can get this team concept off the ground. So if I don't contact you or one of your buddies let me know through here or the tavern.

What if you don't have a team?
Will you make up teams on game day?
I love the concept, it adds a wrinkle to the tournament format.
Tentatively, I'm in.
Who wants to be my part of my team or who can I be a part of a team.
I just may surprise you guys.

| You can play on my team any time, Dave! We could even justify it as some kind of Ontario team. If we get Bernie out and a few Torontonians, plus one more Ottawa player I'm sure is in, we can get two Ontario teams. |

Good Question Dave.
There could be alll kinds of variations. I usually don't like to name names but for the sake of all the what if's ...
In my brain I see Alain Eric and David playing as NCR I. They would be a tough team to beat.
There has been some expression of interest out of the west. So if 2 show up from Edmonton, then perhaps they could grab Bernie (living west of here) and Team Canada West could be a tough out.
I am trying to get a couple of Americans to come. If I can get two players out of the USA, I was born in the States so in a stretch ...
Or Stephen myself and Iron Frank form NCR II A Cinderella story just waiting to be told.
Or You Steve and me
Or my family is from the West and I wear a cowboy hat? That could mean Bernie, Stephan and Dave plays for Team Ontario.
Maybe Iron Frank could line up some guys from Montreal?
So six Teams would be awesome. Obviously confirming a strong feild of regional players would make it more appealing to traveling Teams.
Anyway I am open to any ideas. _________________ John Cooke

What happens if we don't get a number of players divisible by 3? If it's one too many, the organizer could sit out , but if it's one too few, that's a problem (e.g., 23, 20, or 17). |

Yes indeed it could get sticky. We would need to know well in advance who is coming to avoid a mess. If there is one too many I would sit out the team competition. I would still get to play in the individual games.
But the main point is there would be no last minute sign ups. _________________ John Cooke

| Note that the PP2 event is going on Saturday 2012-09-29 in Cambridge. If we want to draw from multi-board players in the Golden Horseshoe and PP2 players in general, the Stiga event must avoid that weekend. |

Getting closer and there has not been a lot of interest expressed in this Ottawa/ Gatineau tourney. Therefore I am placing a deadline of August 22nd for this gig. If folks are coming I need some time to get better games in.
I understand how difficult it is to travel, so I am not surprised. I wish I could travel more...
any who please contact me as soon as you can if you are interested in coming to Ottawa?

Due to lack of interest, the Ottawa/ Gatineau event has been postponed.
I hope to do something this fall, so all is not lost. Just delayed. _________________ John Cooke

A check of the calendar shows that to be US Thanksgiving weekend.
Not expressing any value judgements there, just noting it. |
