The Vancouver Table Hockey Club was represented well in Edmonton this past weekend by Warren Klotz and Dominic Froome. Klotz finished 3rd and Froome 5th in the 10th annual Edmonton Centennial Challenges' 18 player field. Unfortunately they had to play each other in the first round of the "A" group playoffs. Edmonton reporters tell me Froome was heard saying "I can't believe this! This is what we tried to get away from by flying to Edmonton this weekend!" Klotz really focused on taking on the top ranked North American Stiga player (Reggie Stefaniszyn) for bragging rights as the days top dog adding: "Best of luck to you Froome. One of us is going to the final four!"

The series results:
Warren 5-4, Dominic 3-2, Dominic 4-2, Warren 3-0, Warren 3-2OT, Warren 6-2. (Klotz wins the series 4 games to 2.)

Klotz would have his chance to dethrone Reggie Stefaniszyn as the greatest Edmonton hockey dynasty since the Gretzky led Oilers. But Reggie, with his controlled, persistent and fintar deadly game would not be denied. Winning the Semi Finals series 4 games to 1. Klotz, did knock off the top NA ranked Stefaniszyn in game 3 by a score of 5-1 but outside of a "rock this lousy boat ride" attempt by Klotz Reggie would not be denied a trip to defend his Centennial title against ETHL foe Kent Richter.

The Centennial Final series, I'm told by the Vancouver players, was a thing of beauty. Stefaniszyn jumped out to a 3 games to 0 lead only to see Richter hang on for what seemed like an eternity against NA's top Stiga dog. Richter rattled off three straight wins including a game six overtime win. A game that Richter tied up with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation time. The winning goal a LW to C high bullet launched by Richter to force game 7.

In game 7 Reggie Stefaniszyn would not be denied. He jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and Richter was in trouble the rest of the way. Richter handled the disappointment with class, Froome tells me, and displayed a shining example of how all players should conduct themselves in organized table hockey. The love of the game should be top priority or organisers can only suffer the consequences.

Reggie Stefaniszyn has got the respect of the top VTHCers and Team Canada's Captain is an incredible story in dedication to climbing the World's Stiga mountain. Canada can only hope the climb will continue into 2015 in Russia. Site of the next World Cup of Table Hockey.

Klotz would play an offensively talented player, in Dwayne Pankiw, for the third place prize. It was an ideal match up for the goal scoring machine that Warren Klotz often is. Pankiw plays a fast game. He explained to Froome that he played his first game of table hockey with a marble and that's the style he's always held onto on any table hockey game he's ever played. (A marble will only run away if you don't move it quickly.) Pankiw is a dedicated defensive mind set away from giving the top two ETHLers a real run for their money. Klotz, took the third place series 3 games to 1 scoring too many goals to even count. Or should I even believe Froome who still owes me $20 plus interest! Why isn't he in politics anyway?

I'm back from the Bahamas and it's good to be home. The VTHC enters it's stretch drive to the VTHC Cup on Saturday, September 28th at 1pm. For all the latest on the VTHC go to www.vthc.net . But now, this table hockey reporter needs some sun burn lotion and a trip to an AA meeting asap.

Thanks Andrew!

It was fun to be back in Edmonton. What a great group of guys!

In time I will post Will Wong's photos of the event. I also have video
of game six and seven of the A Pool Finals. In time I hope to post
them too.

Still recovering from the weekend. It had been seven years since
I played in a tournament that size. Takes lots of energy to play
two round robins and have enough left to compete in the playoffs.

I love the challenge of competing in a tournament, but the best
memories are sharing the trip with Dominic, visiting with
old TH friends, and meeting new ones.

I love the game, but it is the people that made the event special!

Warren

P.S Thanks Reggie for hosting the event and posting the stats,
Will for all the stats work and for running the cd timer/sound,
and thanks to all the other guys that helped make the event happen.
