I wrote an article once, featuring Burt Brassard, organizer of the upcoming Quebec Open. (the photos may not appear, so ignore the 'captions' which may appear under the missing photos)

By Mark Sokolski

One of Ontario’s finest table hockey players just happens to be one of the legends of table hockey in Quebec! Burt Brassard, known by many as “The Flying Frenchman”, is one of the craftiest and fastest table hockey players on the circuit. His passion for table hockey sprouted the way it did for many good Canadian boys… he got a Coleco game as a Christmas present from his ‘papa’ and the rest was history!

Well, a lot of history, if you look at Brassard’s table hockey resume! BB founded the UHTQ Coleco League, which has been running in Quebec City for 10 years. Brassard also was the founding father of organized table hockey in the province of Quebec. The “Quebec Open” Table Hockey Tournament will ‘open’ its doors for its 10th Anniversary on May 23, 2010. Burt Brassard is not only a serious organizer but a remarkable player. None are equal to the task of being as competitive as Burt, while cheerfully smiling and swearing at you in French the whole while!

East VS West… Burt Brassard of Quebec faces Sheldon Nederlof of Alberta in the 2005 Toronto Classic.

While Brassard claims to be a true Beliveau fan, his nickname had other roots in the legends of Montreal Canadiens history:

Nearly a century ago, this was the label perfectly worn by Didier (Cannonball) Pitre, the first Canadien in franchise history to sign a playing contract.
Pitre starred in the club’s first game, a 7-6 overtime win over the Cobalt Silver Kings at Montreal’s natural-ice Jubilee Rink on Jan. 5, 1910.
With Jack Laviolette and Newsy Lalonde, he was one of the club’s original Flying Frenchmen, so nicknamed by sportswriters, a defenceman turned forward whose speed belied his bulk in fledgling seven-a-side pro hockey.

Burt Brassard, always donning his Quebec Nordiques jersey, found himself in the final four (back table…facing Mervyn Reutlinger), while Sokolski battled Peden. Onlookers include referee Curtis Wilson, Denis Giguere (Quebec), and Bernie Kunzler.

Brassard is a decorated table hockey veteran. While all in Quebec know of Burt’s championship play at the elite level, only some in Ontario will recall that Burt has also been crowned the Champion TWICE (2001 and 2004) at the Johnny Goodguy Coleco tournament in Brampton, ON. Burt has also attended more Ontario events than any other non-Ontario resident (and likely more events than most Ontario players have attended…).
Brassard has attended the Johnny Goodguy four times, as many showings in Toronto for the Powerplay2 Classic, and also participated in the Hamilton Ontario Table Hockey Championships several times. Burt has managed a final four finish twice in Toronto, and despite not considering himself an elite Powerplay2 competitor, he always plays his fast-paced and skilful tactics and finds ways to win. Burt eliminated Justin Hawthorne in sudden death of the final game of a playoff series, in a tournament where Justin was ranked at the top and playing like the champion he was to become later that year.

Good stuff, Mark. Thank you for sharing it with us.

In that same spirit, here's the writeup about Burt's tournament held last weekend:

February 10th, 2014

CARLO BOSSIO wins again (for a 6th time) the "Quebec Open", againts last year's winner PAT CÔTÉ (a classic matchup)!

Last Saturday (February 8th) took place the 14th edition of the "Quebec Open" tournament in Quebec City.

22 players took part in this classic table hockey event, held by Mr. Burt Brassard since the year 2001. It was a great day with lots of fun for everyone, and we only started 10 minutes late and we finished on time! This tournament is really worth the trip, to beautiful and historic "Quebec City", especially during the Winter Carnival.

5 new players took part in the event for the first time: John Fayolle, Marc Paquet, Jean-François Guimond, Jean-Pierre Flynn et Pascal Charpentier.

Here are the top 3 in the "A" class: 1) Carlo Bossio, 2) Patrick Côté, 3) Gino Bossio .

Here are the top 3 in the "B" class: 1) Burt Brassard, 2) Daniel Bordeleau, 3) Michael Brossard .

Here are the top 3 in the "C" class: 1) Denis Giguère, 2) Maxime Sylvestre, 3) Denis Martel .

25 bonus points will be awarded to every player, since the top 5 of last year's final rankings were there. The rankings are now updated. Hope to see you next year for the "QO-15" in 2015!

The next tournament of the NTHL-HTQ tour is the "Motor City Classic" in Detroit, MI, USA on Friday March 21st 2014
