TABLE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

United States Stiga Shootout: Showdown between #1 in USA and #1 from Canada

January 28, 2017, Anaheim, CA -- The 10th United States Stiga Shootout attracted 45 players and featured a battle royal culminating with the Championship Series between the two top-ranked table hockey players in the entire Western Hemisphere! The USA’s #1-ranked player, Roman Nezhyba, prevailed in a thrilling seven-game Final against the #1-ranked player from Canada, Bernie Kunzler.

Roman successfully defended his United States Stiga Shootout championship and claimed his third Stanley Cup of Table Hockey in the past four events. Roman has really earned his championships: In order to win his three Cups, Roman needed to beat three table hockey heavyweights for his Stanley Cup Final victories vs. Reggie Stefaniszyn, Bjarne Axelsen, and Bernie Kunzler.

In this year’s best-of-seven championship series, on the heels of a shutout victory and an overtime win, Bernie led the Final three games to one. It didn’t look good for Roman. However, as Yogi Berra once said: “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Roman came storming back to win three straight games!

United States Stiga Shootout #10
Final: Stanley Cup of Table Hockey

Bernie 4 2 3 5 3 4 2 – 3 (23 goals for)
OT* * * * (Three OT games: Games 2, 4, 5.)
Roman 2 3 0 4 4 7 9 – 4 (29 goals for)

In the seventh and deciding game, Roman scored on his first four shots on goal and never looked back. Bernie ran into a buzz saw.

Shaking his head afterwards, Bernie lamented the fact that this was his fourth straight 2nd Place finish in major North American table hockey tournaments (Toronto to Jan Pelkonen, Finland; Edmonton to Bjarne Axelsen, Denmark; and Lemont to Karl Jonsson, Sweden).

Bernie, from the Toronto, Canada suburb of Kitchener, Ontario, made the first trip of his life to Southern California. He loved the warm, 80-degree weather and described the place as paradise! Bernie enjoyed visiting Laguna Beach, putting his feet into the Pacific Ocean, seeing the snow-capped mountains surrounding Los Angeles and Orange County, and playing in the United States Stiga Shootout.

Some incredible facts and figures: Tournament champion Roman Nezhyba has played in only 16 table hockey tournaments -- and he’s won four of them! Amazingly, Roman does not even have his own table hockey game! Between tournaments, Roman relies on playing best-of-seven series against his sparring partner, Kevin Rafferty, to stay sharp and be at the top of his game. Just imagine if Roman practiced at home, too? Wow!

Tournament organizer Kevin Rafferty finished in 3rd Place.

Here’s the final order of finish for all 45 table hockey players, including their International Table Hockey Federation (ITHF) World Ranking just prior to the tournament:

Six first-time tournament players from San Diego – a great group of guys calling themselves “the rowdy rodders” – discovered our table hockey tournament online in the past couple of months. Collectively, they were thrilled for the opportunity to play in the United States Stiga Shootout and drove the 100-miles up to Anaheim together.

The San Diego contingent’s highest finisher, Greg Dorn, won the B Group Championship! Jeff Wilens, a lawyer from nearby Yorba Linda, took home the 2nd Place Trophy. Fourth grader, Ryan Le, won the 3rd Place Trophy. Ryan also earned a special medal of recognition as the “Top Junior Player” (under 18-years-old) at the tournament!

Kelly Rafferty, an architect from suburban Chicago, won the C Group Championship. San Diego’s Brian Pottenger earned 2nd Place. Fellow San Diego area table hockey player Matt Shelby won the 3rd Place Trophy.

Fourth grade student, Kamran Maghzi won the D Group Championship. Seventh grade student Max Fineman earned the 2nd Place Trophy. Fifth grade student, Alyssa Moody took home the 3rd Place Trophy. Alyssa also earned the distinction of winning the medal for “Best Female Player” at the tournament!

Seventh grade student, Lukas Lin won the E Group Championship. Fourth grade student, Avi Gupta earned the 2nd Place Medal. Sixth grade student, Dylan Warner took home the 3rd Place Medal.

Fifth grader, Shane Moody, won the F Group Championship. Music Teacher, Jeinine Urquiza earned the 2nd Place Medal. Albert Echanique from nearby Santa Ana, won the 3rd Place Medal.

Second grader, Akshna Gupta earned the “Most Sportsmanlike Player” medal.
Akshna was an excellent role model of perseverance! She played hard, never gave up, and displayed great character, even in defeat. Akshna never looked upset or disappointed and shook hands with every opponent. She, like everyone else, had a lot of fun playing table hockey at the 10th United States Stiga Shootout! It was a great day for table hockey!

Special thank yous: Thank you to all 45 players for a GREAT table hockey tournament! Your friendliness and cooperation were noticed and appreciated! It was awesome to see so many table hockey players – from a wide range of ages, skill levels, and backgrounds – getting along so well and just plain enjoying the FUN of playing table hockey!

Thanks to Vegas Jay Petrick and John Labianca for making the drive back and forth from Las Vegas. Jay was sporting some very cool Vegas Golden Knights gear! It will be great to have NHL hockey in Las Vegas next year!

Thanks to Roman for helping with tournament set-up on Thursday night and helping with all of the stats during the tournament. Thanks to Pierre Chastenais from Montreal. He graciously loaned many sets of puck-catchers AND helped with tournament set-up on Friday night. Thanks to Bernie for assistance with tournament take-down on Sunday.

Thanks to Vicky Mantell for taking some official tournament photos. Thanks to the many moms and dads for helping out and pitching in to do whatever it takes on tournament day! From managing the free snack area, to picking-up and facilitating pizza lunch, to encouraging your kids to compete and have FUN playing table hockey.

Thank you to Len Mecca at meccanism.com His help and expert advice are most appreciated. The Stiga Bubbledome was on display at the tournament. The Bubbledome is a great way to enjoy continuous play and no lost pucks!

Keeping with our tradition at the United States Stiga Shootout, we have a players-only raffle and we giveaway a brand new Stiga table hockey game! Our grand prize winner this year was 12-year-old Riley Jussaume from Los Angeles. Riley had three versions of the game to choose from: 1) Stiga NHL Stanley Cup, 2) Stiga Playoff, and 3) the Stiga High-Speed table hockey game. Riley chose the Stiga High-Speed version! Thank you, Len Mecca at meccanism.com
