I can assure you all that Dominic Froome is not writing these articles. It's me. Johnny Canuck! Official beat reporter for all things table hockey in Vancouver! In fact tell that guy, Froome, he still owes me 50 bucks for the feature write up I did on his VTHC playoff struggles! (Who would ever consider making a playoff bum an internet TH star if there wasn't money involved under the table!) Sheesh!

Great day of table hockey today with one new player and a newer
player returning. Only thing missing was Suke and Harv... hope
they are back in July.

I won't say who won, but will say Travis was much improved and
that Paul showed some real promise in making the leap from
being a new Stiga player to being competitive in the VTHC.

We had a fun round robin and intense Gold Medal Series!

Afterwards a beer and some talk about TH and reality TV.

I will Johnny Canuck take it from here.... or from there? Confused

Dominic Froome wins gold in the 3rd VTHC date of the 2012 season! A hard fought Gold Medal Series against medal points leader Warren Klotz was the capper in a great day of Stiga battles. A Gold Medal Series that went the distance and saw two players really duke it out over every square inch of the Stiga playing surface in every moment of every game.

Froome was heard saying: "That's the best playoff series I've ever enjoyed playing! What a rush!"

Time had to run out on one player and it came down to the moments of the series! Often a mere 20 second window being the difference with two quick goals surrounded by many seconds of level play and great save after great save in a couple of 3-1 late series wins for Froome. Two wins that saw a 3-2 series deficit turn ito a 4 games to 3 victory for Froome.

The VTHC also welcomed rookie Paul Lobley to the mix. Paul, a student of this game, able to keep a positive out look on table hockey and an appreciation of the game when played at a high level. Paul, marvelling at the amount of tiny details that goes into the skill side of Stiga Table Hockey, realizing that time's all that's needed to develop an offensive play book. Today, also seeing how important positioning of your player figures is, especially when not in control of the puck. The Stiga game is as much about playing well, and working hard without the puck as it is with the puck. Bring the centre all the way back every time you lose the puck. Bring the other forwards back while under attack and improve your chances of winning a race to any loose puck is what good positioning can give a player. An edge. (Like a GM deciding to find players with greater foot speed to close on an opponent and take away time and space. To use the greater foot speed to win races to loose pucks too.) An improvement to bring to a newbies game that takes only a second of time each time the puck is lost. A good habit for a rookie to add to his game while the skill is developing.

Travis Pohl showed he's been developing a game , too, with his own Stiga game at home and players to battle during the week days. He went out and scored 37 goals in 12 round robin games while giving up 39 today. Losing a 3-2 game to Froome and a couple of 5-3 losses to Warren Klotz, the battle was there and the next step for Travis could be all that he needs to muscle in on Gold Medal opportunites in the future. Today Travis scooped up his first VTHC medal. A Bronze and with it 2 medal points on the day.

Warren Klotz, leading the way with 63 round robin goals and regaining the overall VTHC goal scoring lead for 2012, always maintained a confidence in every game he played. Warren went 10-1-1 to take top seed heading into the playoffs. Unfortunately, as Froome has experienced in the prior two league dates top seeding has not been kind to Gold Medal hopes. This trend continued today. Here were the round robin numbers for June 17th, 2012:

(W L OTL PTS GF GA SO)

1)Warren Klotz 10-1-1-21-63-23-4
2)Dom Froome 10-2-0-20-49-17-3
3)Travis Pohl 4-8-0-8-37-39-3
4)Paul Lobley 0-12-0-0-06-76-0

Playoff scores went like this:

Semi Finals: (Best of 5)
1)Warren Klotz versus 4)Paul Lobley.
Warren 8-1, Warren 7-2, Warren 7-0. (Klotz wins 3 games to 0.)

2)Dom Froome versus 3)Travis Pohl.
Dom 8-1, Dom 4-0, Dom 4-1. (Froome wins 3 games to 0.)

Bronze Medal Series: (Best of 3)
3)Travis Pohl versus 4)Paul Lobley.
Travis 5-1, Travis 6-3. (Pohl wins 2 games to 0.)

Gold Medal Series: (Best of 7)
1)Warren Klotz versus 2)Dominic Froome
Dom 4-2, Warren 2-1, Warren 4-3, Dom 4-1, Warren 3-2, Dom 3-1, Dom 3-1. (Froome wins 4 games to 3)

Gold: Dominic Froome (3 points + 1 for attendance: 4 points.)
Silver: Warren Klotz (2 points + 1 for attendance: 3 points.)

4th Place: Paul Lobley (1 point for attendance: 1 point.)

As always, beat reporter Johnny Canuck was on hand with paper
and pen to report the latest happenings in the VTHC. As always
his reports are well thought out and backed up with thorough
stats from the day. Way to go Johnny! Clapping

Too tired to say much else except I think everybody had a fine
day of TH. I think I played my best day which wasn't good enough
to take Gold. Dom is starting to click more on his old go to plays,
Travis really upped his game and was a force to be reckoned with.
He will be winning more games soon. Paul was a real sport, playing
out the day against more skilled Stiga players and keeping a strong
positive attitude throughout the afternoon.

Our site will updated soon with new overall stats and Dom's name
beside the Gold Medal Not Worthy

Thanks Paul, yet I feel that I got quite a ways to go to get back
to the level I used to be at. My saving grace is the other vets
hadn't been playing the alst few years either. Very Happy

I find at times the old feeling/timing is back, yet too much of the
time I am rushing plays, playing sloppy, making low precentage
choices and then it costing me.

Having said that, it is fun to be playing again, fun to play an epic
series against Dom, playing with Suke and Harv again, and last
but not least, having some new blood in the club is great too!

It is all about having fun, right? Winning doesn't matter, right? Laughing

Thanks, Warren

If your looking for more players Torrey Owen is a Stiga player I had here a couple of time while he lived in Victoria & hes a real nice guy & last I heard he lived on your side of the pond. Harvey could vouch for him. Let me know if you want his email address. Congrads to Warren & Dom on there gold medals! (pick it up Harv!) Thats also sweet medal system you have there, it gives ya something extra to go after every outing.

Cheers

Yes please pass along his address.

As for the medal system, it is kind of cool way to make both an
individual outing worth something in and of itself and also at the
same time count towards overall standings.

It was designed so that a player could miss one or two outings
without falling too far behind in the standings. With the old points
system a player could fall twenty to thirty points back after two
outings. The way we have it now, a player can at best pick up
four points per outing, at worst, they pick up one point. So it still
gives a player a chance to come back after missing an outing to
close the gap if they win a medal.

If I remember correctly it was Dominic that came up with the
point system so we could play individual round robins and
playoffs that counted towards overall standings and yet didn't
punish somebody too badly for missing a date or two. It is
quite a clever system he came up with Clapping

One a related note. We might be having a VTHC Training
date this saturday. Also our next Official Club date is July 21st.

Cheers, Warren

Great looking website you have there.

I wish I could just play the game, P4 keeps asking me to play and I can't because I injured my right arm, wrist and hand. It is even too painful to turn the key to start a vehicle. or unlock a door.

Again, the site looks great, and it is really good to see most of the Vancouver core players back together.

Word is that Paul Lobley is cool with early Stiga playing struggles. He'll be there on July 21st. The local player base is expanding. A secret source has tipped me off about a rumour of "King Sized" proportions taking shape for 2013.......

Hello Steve, yep that is you. Thanks for your last name.
I sent you an email about the 21st.

So far we have nine possible players, Travis can't make it this
month otherwise we would be looking at a possible ten.

So far the names are

Harvey Yee
Suke Dosanjh
Dom Froome
Warren Klotz
Paul Lobley
Martin Babak
Steve Crawford
Chris Dranfield

Funny, for awhile there we couldn't pay somebody to come out
and now we have have ten players and more in the wings.
Weird! Confused

This saturday the VTHC will be hosting it's 4th outing of the 2012
season. We will have five this outing with a couple of newcomers
who will be arriving sometime during our playoffs to watch a few
games. Hopefully they can get in a few games with us after the
Gold Medal Series is over.

This time out we will have

Suke Dosanjh
Dom Froome
Paul Lobley
Warren Klotz
Harvey Yee

Steve Crawford and Chris Dranfield can't make it on time to play
but have plans to come out later on. Next month we hope they
can join us for the full day.

We hope to have Travis Pohl back out next month too.

Below is our schedule for the round robin.

It was a great day for Stiga Table hockey in Vancouver! A full day for VTHC President Warren Klotz and VTHC Vice President Dominic Froome as they first brought in VTHC veterans Suke Dosanjh and Harvey Yee for a 12 game round robin and medal playoffs. Followed by VTHC rookie training camp day for newcomers Paul Lobley, Steve Crawford and Chris Dranfield. The rookies also enjoyed an exhibition 8 game round robin with all questions about all things Stiga answered by Klotz and Froome, who also played in the exhibition games. VTHC games will be for real next August 25th at 1pm, for the newbies, who'll join the vets to begin their VTHC playing days. (Rookies that are well on their way to becoming competitive VTHC Stiga players of the future.)

But now the results from today's games that counted in the VTHC medal standings. Dominic Froome, moving to within 2 points of medal points leader Warren Klotz, takes the gold medal for the second league date in a row with a gruelling marathon 7 game series against upstart and viper like powerhouse Suke Dosanjh. The series was fast, high scoring and often lobsided from one game to the next with Froome surviving a game four overtime that lasted two and a half minutes to tie the series 2 games to 2. A true series turning point. Dosanjh winning his first silver medal of the 2012 season and moving into third place in the overall medal points standings ahead of Harvey Yee.

The core four all brought strong games with them to this VTHC league date and Harvey Yee saw some break through round robin games play out with a 6-2 win over Suke Dosanjh, a 3-1 win over Froome and a stunning 7-1 win over Warren Klotz. Although Harvey finished fourth in the round robin he was every bit a contender to win a medal all day.

Warren Klotz, played an excellent Semi Finals series, against Suke Dosanjh, falling short 3 games to 2 but playing well enough to win. This series was as good as a playoff battle can be with two overtimes including an overtime to decide it in game 5. The game 3 OT lasted three minutes and it was a case of two offensive minded players shooting, passing and nearly scoring many great goals using speed and turnovers as the catalyst to almost certainly hit net with the pucks. Bottom line was that someone had to lose. OT has a way of ending a great time doesn't it? Klotz settles on a bronze medal today. He won the bronze with a 2 games to 1 series win over Harvey Yee.

The round robin was close all day with each player leading it at different times before the 12 gamer was all played out. Only two shutouts, both by Warren Klotz. Here were the round robin numbers on the day:
(W L OTL PTS GF GA SO)
1)Froome 7-4-1-15-41-35-0
2)Dosanjh 7-5-0-14-35-40-0
3)Klotz 6-5-1-13-38-37-2
4)Yee 4-8-0--8-29-31-0

Playoff series went like this:

VTHC Semi Finals: (Best of 5)
1)Dom Froome versus 4)Harvey Yee
Dom 6-4, Dom 6-5OT, Dom 5-2. (Froome wins 3 games to 0.)

2)Suke Dosanjh versus 3)Warren Klotz
Suke 4-2, Warren 6-3, Warren 2-1OT, Suke 5-3, Suke 4-3OT. (Dosanjh wins 3 games to 2.)

VTHC Bronze Medal Series: (Best of 3)
3)Warren Klotz versus 4)Harvey Yee.
Warren 9-4, Harvey 3-2, Warren 6-1. (Klotz wins 2 games to 1.)

VTHC Gold Medal Series:
1)Dom Froome versus 2)Suke Dosanjh.
Dom 7-1, Suke 4-2, Suke 3-1, Dom 4-3OT, Dom 5-2, Suke 7-1, Dom 7-3. (Froome wins series 4 games to 3.)

Gold: Dom Froome 4 points. (3 for gold + 1 for attendance.)
Silver: Suke Dosanjh 3 points. (2 for silver + 1 for attendance.)
Bronze: Warren Klotz 2 points. (1 for Bronze + 1 for attendance.)
4th Place: Harvey Yee. 1 point. (1 point for attendance.)

VTHC 2012 Overall Medal Points Race:
1)Warren Klotz 13
2)Dom Froome 11
3)Suke Dosanjh 6
4)Harvey Yee 5
5)Eric Chesick 3
6)Travis Pohl 3
7)Alain Limoges 1
8)Paul Lobley 1

Medal Count: (G-S-B)
1)Warren Klotz 2-1-1
2)Dom Froome 2-0-1
3)Suke Dosanjh 0-1-1
4)Harvey Yee 0-1-0
5)Eric Chesick 0-1-0
6)Travis Pohl 0-0-1
7)Alain Limoges 0-0-0
8)Paul Lobley 0-0-0

4)Harvey Yee 79 - 36 - 2.19

What a day! Glad Johnny Canuck was there to catch the action
and post the re-cap here on THH.

Congrats to Dom Froome for winning his second straight Gold
Medal Series. No easy feat in our Club!

Also congrats to Suke and Harv. Harv held first place for
awhile and thumped me badly too. I think it was 7-1.

Suke on the other hand stumbled out of the gate losing
badly two or three times. Then suddenly the giant woke up
and the Suke of old was back. He was suddenly very intense
and focused, he was his old "Viper" self!

We had a very interesting day where we all were in first place
at one point or another during our round robin. Also, I think
we were all 2nd, 3rd, or 4th at one time or another too.

It was a great day of TH. Everybody played really well at times
and for most of the round robin, everybody was within a game
or so of first place.

The VTHC Rookie Camp was great too! Our newest member Paul
Lobley came out along with potential VTHC rookies Steve Crawford
and Chris Dranfield.

Paul was vastly improved, he scoring from some set plays and his
defense and goaltending is tightening up. Most be the mentoring he
is getting from Mr. Froome.

Steve and Chris had obviously played someTH before and I can
see them quickly becoming competitors if they join the VTHC.

Good to have you guys out yesterday!

On behalf of the entire VTHC I would like to thank you for this invite to join you guys on Coleco 5380 this past weekend. VTHC headquarters received this message too late to even consider the road trip. Embarassed

Congrats to Harvey Yee for winning the Coleco championship against a tough bunch of players. He's got some talent! A VTHC contender to be sure!

Both Warren Klotz and Dominic Froome welcome a Victoria TH plan to include Stiga moving forward to 2013 to add to the great times provided by the S-Slot games.. 2013 could be an interesting field of players with Stiga included into the Vancouver Island mix of events and possibly one big day in Vancouver too.

The VTHC resumes play on August 25th. Rumours of a two tier round robin plan for 6 and 8 player Club dates could become part of the plan too. (A rumoured move to support the efforts of VTHC rookies of the future.)

Okay the stage is set for the Vancouver Table Hockey Club's
5th Club date of the 2012.

With three players out of town and one who can't make it
into town, we are down to four players today. Perhaps
summer isn't the best time to run a Club date.

Non the less, vets Dom Froome, and Warren Klotz will
face off against newcomers Steve Crawford and Chris Dranfield
for some good ole Stiga action.

For those interested in the VTHC, please visit our site at

P.S The VTHC is in the planning stages of some tweaks of
how dates are scheduled, and how points are rewarded etc.
Some of these tweaks will be put in place this season, others
will be implimented during the 2103 season... which by the
way will be the 10th anniversary of the VTHC!

I am sure Johnny Canuck will fill us all in with the details
off all the changes.
