The VTHC saw some thrills and spills, today, as VTHC newcomers Chris Dranfield and Steve Crawford made their VTHC debuts against VTHC vets Warren Klotz and Dominic Froome. It was also the first time a two tier round robin format was used by the VTHC. A system designed to give players, of all ability, a more enjoyable and competitive day of Stiga table hockey.

Two Tier format saw VTHC Top ranked Warren Klotz and VTHC second ranked Dominic Froome placed into the "Upper Tier" and unranked rookies Chris Dranfield and Steve Crawford placed into the "Lower Tier" for today's games. The schedule saw Upper Tier players play each other 6 times, Lower Tier players play each other 6 times, and cross over matchups seeing Top Tier players play each of the Lower Tier players 3 times each. (A 12 game round robin per player.)

Who won the gold medal today? Dominic Froome wins his 3rd consecutive gold medal of the 2012 VTHC season going 9-3-0, in the round robin, and facing his biggest rival, Warren Klotz, in the Gold Medal series. A Gold Medal series that went the distance upon some heroic victories by Klotz down the stretch. (Including a "game 5" victory with Klotz scoring the winning goal with a nice RW to C low tip that had some zip and a puck that hit the far side of the net with some air under it. A true buzzer beater that left no doubt of it's legitimacy.

Even the "Upper Tier" round robin had a one game fight for top seed as Froome beat Klotz 3-0, with both players sitting at 8-3-0 in the round robin. This game was important as Steve Crawford was no slouch in the Semi Finals for Klotz to solve. Also the final round robin game, for Chris and Steve, saw them play a 4 minute and 51 second OT to decide it. A game won by Steve Crawford 3-2.

The Gold Medal Series saw Froome jump out to a 3 games to 0 lead, over Klotz, with some big shots early on and a come back 4-3 OT victory, in game three, that saw Klotz squander 2-0 and 3-1 leads. Froome scoring the tieing goal off a LD give away, Klotz tried to force between Froome's defensively positioned RD and RW in the neutral zone. With the gift wrapped puck Froome scored with a hard RW to C shot hitting net short side high up with only 20 seconds remaining. A play that Klotz cannot believe he made at such a crucial time in such an important game. Froome is now 1 medal point behind Klotz for top spot in the VTHC playoff rankings.

For the rookies, Steve Crawford went 5-5-2 and gained the 2nd playoff seeding for todays' medal playoff rounds. (A seeding that is automatic for the winner of the "Lower Tier" round robin.) Chris Dranfield, who struggled much of the round robin going 2-9-1, made a nice recovery and won the Bronze Medal series 2 games to 1 over Steve Crawford. Chris overcame a 1 game to 0 deficit to win it too. Stamina issues were felt by both rookies who each played 18 games today. Froome and Klotz, no strangers to many games played in a day, each player 22 games. In head to head Froome beat out Klotz winning 7 of 13 total games including the playoffs.

The general consensus for "two tier" round robins was positive. The two tier approach will be used when club dates have 4, 6 or 8 players. The balanced schedule "One Group" round robin plan only to be used for 5 and 7 player Club dates.

Here were all the numbers of the round robin. (Winner of "Upper Tier" automatically seeded #1 and winner of "Lower Tier" automatically seeded #2. #3 seed and #4 seed placed in order of total round robin points. (7 goal mercy rule was used twice in the round robin.)

Information just released by the VTHC President Warren Klotz and Vice President Dominic Froome: The medal points plan for 2013. (More points up for grabs.) Here's the formula to determine Gold Medal Points awarded per Club Date in 2013:

Gold medal points, awarded, equal the Club Date player number X2 + 1 for attendance. (One point less, per player, all the way down the line.)

4Players:Gold:9pts/Silver:8pts/Bronze:7pts/4th place:6pts.
5Players:Gold:11pts/Silver:10pts/Bronze:9pts/4th:8pts/5th:7pts.

Below are August's Medal Winners!

Dominic Froome

WarrenKlotz

Chris Dranfield

What an awsme day of TH. Dom runs the tables again, but not before
losing his 3 to 0 series lead to force game seven. Then in game seven
he is suddenly on top of his game, taking control of the seires back
in the final and most important game! Congrats Dom for your well
deserved victory and great play yesterday!

A side not that I am not sure that Johnny C mentioned. And that is
Froome has won the last three Gold Medal Series by having to win
game seven each time! So he is Mr. Clutch, Mr. October! Hopefully
he finds a way to lose these game sevens by the time the VTHC CUP
playoffs come about Razz

Congrats too are in order for both Steve and Chris. I think I shut out
Steve 7-0 early on and he came back to beat me the next time out.
My series against him took every thing I had to beat him.

Congrats are in order for Chris as well who beat Steve in the Bronze
series. Which leads me to think that how we have it set up now, what
ends up realy counting is how one performs in the playoffs. Not to take
away from any of our individual achievments in the round robin, but
like the NHL playoffs, once you are in the post seasn, it really doesn't
matter what you did during the
year!

Thanks all who play in the VTHC and all those who cheer us on!

Cowboy!

P.S The VTHC site will be updated asap to reflect the current standings.

Thanks Johnny Canuck for posting the VTHC Milestones! Froome and
Klotz with 4300 goals scored between them. That is a lot of kurplunking
of pucks dropping into suplaks! Very Happy

VTHC President Warren Klotz and VTHC Vice President Dominic Froome have released the VTHC all time stats (on all games) of all VTHC players that have ever played in the VTHC. The numbers tell the story of the history of the Vancouver Table Hockey Club. They can also be a guiding light to the eventual construction of the VTHC Hall of Fame. A hall that honours all winners of the VTHC Cup.

VTHC Vice President Froome explains the importance of the all time stats:

"These numbers show our newest players how much of a table hockey challenge the VTHC is. The VTHC aims to give all players a maximum table hockey experience. A VTHC Cup championship is not gained over night. It takes time honoured practise, TH experiences and developed skills to compete for the VTHC Cup each season. I, along with VTHC President Warren Klotz, hope that these all time statistics can inspire players to understand that this game is far more than a lucky shot or a lucky bounce to glory. We hope all VTHCers, along with all TH people around the globe, enjoy them and find them an inspiration to apply all time stats to their respective Leagues and Clubs around the TH World."

To view the VTHC all time stats you can click on:

http://www.vthc.net/all-time-stats/all-time-all-games-combined.html

The VTHC resumes action on Saturday, September 22nd. Dominic Froome is riding a gold medal wave but three straight gold medal series, all won in 7 games, says the wave could be running out of ocean soon. Games are slated for 1pm - 5pm on the Saturday. Stay tuned VTHC table hockey fans. For all things VTHC go to: www.vthc.net

Thanks Johnny!

Just a quick note to announce that the ALL TIME STATS now include
all the games from this year. I did this so it would be easier see
any upcoming milestones.

Though I added this year's stats, it was Dom Froome who did all
the hard work of adding up our stats from over the years.

A big thank you to Dom! Clapping

To see the updated ALL TIME STATS, go to
http://vthc.net/all-time-stats/all-time-all-games-combined.html

Keep in mind that though the stats should be accurate, they will
be double checked for accuracy at the end of our 2012 season.
I say this because sometimes I make errors when entering data. Very Happy

Cheers, Warren

P.S. As soon as possible, the individual ALL TIME STATS from
Stiga, Coleco, and Eagle will be added. As well, our ALL TIME
PLAYOFF RESULTS will be posted to our site.

Froome wins his fourth consecutive gold medal in VTHC action today! A day that saw rookies Paul Lobley, showing serious improvements from his VTHC debut, and Steve Crawford join VTHC President Warren Klotz and VTHC Vice President Dominic Froome in battles.

The Gold Medal Series, between Klotz and Froome for the 3rd time this season, saw many minutes of fast, puck possession scrambled, explosive shooting battles that lended player figure positioning to be the key to much of the series. Froome, scored a number of goals from quick RW inside slot shots, upon turnover, to the short side of goal. Klotz not yet controlling the goalie to make the saves. Klotz, unable to start most of the Gold Medal Series games as well as he'd like. He gave up early goals and leads, with the exception of game three, to Froome in all four Froome Gold Medal Series victories. Froome outscoring Klotz 24-11 in the entire 5 game series for Gold. Froome, gaining from some week day practice sessions, all month, with VTHC rookie Paul Lobley. (The round robin saw Froome win 4 of 6 against Klotz too.)

Paul Lobley was the best VTHC story of the day. He won his first ever VTHC game and also scored 17 goals in his 12 round robin games. He gave up 47 goals, too, but when you look at his VTHC debut, where he went winless, scored 6 goals and allowed 76, the improvement is very noticeable. (A +40 shift in goal differential.) Paul won 3 of his 12 round robin games today. All wins against Steve Crawford.

Froome, now seeded number one in the VTHC, tied Klotz in the medal points race with the Gold medal win. Froome and Klotz are both tied at 19 medal points each with Froome designated top playoff seed due to more gold medal victories on the season. With one VTHC 2012 regular season date remaining the race for the top playoff seed designation could not be closer.

Steve Crawford was the other player, on hand, and he also won 3 games, in the round robin, splitting 6 games with Lobley, and not able to defeat Froome or Klotz on the day. Crawford taking the bronze medal and enjoying his first VTHC medal victory.

Two tier worked well and offered the lower tier guys more positives to base future Stiga endeavours on. Below are the round robin numbers on the day: (W L OTL PTS GF GA SO)

Upper Tier:
1)Froome 10-2-0-20-51-22-3
3)Klotz 8-4-0-16-47-26-4

Lower Tier:
2)Crawford 3-9-0-6-21-41-2
4)Lobley 3-9-0-6-17-47-0

Playoffs went like this. (Winner of Lower Tier automatically seeded number 2, for the playoffs, with choice of side of the second game available for the Semi Final Series.)

Dominic 5-1, Dominic 6-2, Dominic 5-2. (Froome wins 3 games to 0.)

The VTHC, with four players on hand, concluded the 2012 regular season with Dominic Froome winning his 5th consecutive gold medal of the season. A Gold Medal series against Warren Klotz was needed for Froome to finish the 2012 VTHC regular season in style. Froome winning the Gold Medal series 4 games to 1 and being the player that saved his best for last on the day. Froome took the 2012 VTHC medal points race and is designated the top seed heading into the VTHC Cup playoffs in November.

Today's pre playoff VTHC games saw Warren Klotz display a very top level of play throughout the entire opening round robin. He clinched the 2012 VTHC goal scoring crown. (His 6th VTHC goal scoring crown all time.) Klotz scoring a season high 57 round robin goals, today, also led the 2012 VTHC in shutouts between the pipes with 21 on the season. In round robin games, today, Klotz was 4-2-0 against Froome with one of those wins in overtime.

Klotz knows that his mind is TH brilliance but his hands need to catch up to that high level of TH creativity and understanding with more regularity. Practise being the key to seeing Klotz regain the top form his TH smarts can take him to. Timing, on set plays, needing to be more consistent throughout an entire day of games. In Warren's eighth round robin game his LW to C was on fire, both high and low, hitting 4 goals in less than a minute against Froome. Klotz winning that game 6-1. Froome, otherwise, being able to shut down the Klotz attack, from LW, in most of the Gold Medal series. Management of adrenaline being another needed ingredient for Warren to pace himself to be his best in the games that matter the most. (Just like any tournament. Saving your best for last is key to garnering the best possible results in a TH event.)

A couple of other VTHC 2012 award notes: The VTHC Presidents Trophy is won by Dominic Froome. The 2nd time Froome has ever won this award. His 2012 overall round robin record of 62-17-5 amounts to a .738 winning percentage. (No accumulative points awarded this season with the medal points race utilized.) Froome also wins the 2012 VTHC Goaltending Award for the lowest 2012 VTHC goals against average. He gave up an average of 2.12 goals per game in 2012. His 3rd time winning this VTHC award all time.

Steve Crawford won today's Bronze Medal defeating Paul Lobley in two straight, and managing to defeat Froome in a Semi Final playoff game 3-2 in OT too. Progress is being made by Steve and also by Paul Lobley who despite only winning 2 games in the round robin was in much better control of the puck on the attack applying lessons in locking the puck in and finding passes that can reach the centreman in the slot both high and low from either winger. Centremen "scoring finish" around the net being the biggest obstacle for Lobley to improve his game further. Paul Lobley displayed a higher level of play taking Klotz to a 7-5 shootout loss in game one of their Semi Finals series. Lobley leading that game 5-4 fairly late. Klotz suggested the improved play is obvious although Paul did not get the wins he thought he might be able to find on the day. Especially in the 6 round robin games he played against Steve Crawford. Lobley taking only 2 of those 6 games with one loss in overtime.

Further evidence of stronger play from the lower tier players is that only one round robin game was decided by mercy rule. (Seven goal round robin mercy rule used in the VTHC.) In September the number of mercy rules was four and one of them was between upper tier players. Here are the round robin numbers and playoff series numbers on the day:

Upper Tier: (W L OTL PTS GF GA GFPG GAPG SO)
1)Warren Klotz 10-2-0-20-57-20-4.75-1.67-3

4)Paul Lobley 2-9-1-5-20-60-1.67-5.00-0

Thanks Johnny Canuck for fine reporting. We hardly notice you there
on game day with your note pad and pen Very Happy

Congrats to Dom Froome for his fifth straight Gold, four against me
... ouch Confused Dom also had the best goaltending of the year and pulled
off the top regular season record on the last day of the season, just
like back in 2004. Clutch Wins Indeed!

Congrats to Steve and Paul as well, your game's keep getting better
and better. Way to go!

Myself, I had my best day in a long time in the round robin. I found
that extra gear that has been missing and old plays from the dust
covered playbook came back to me without thinking about it. But.....

But come playoff time I ran into Dom again, and he was now the
one on fire, playing at the top of his game. Dominic once again
played a cool even style which has led to much success this year
for him.

Congrats again Dom on not only one fine outing, but five straight
outings where you have been the best player. Clapping Not Worthy

Below are the medal winners for the last regular season outing of
the Vancouver Table Hockey Club.

Below are September's Medal Winners!

Dominic Froome

WarrenKlotz

Steve Crawford

Warren Klotz saved his best for last in the 2012 VTHC season. Winning the VTHC Cup for the 3rd time and 2nd time on the Stiga table hockey game, Warren Klotz took his game to a new level today! In the 2012 VTHC Cup Final he swept Dominic Froome, the 2012 VTHC medal points champ, in convincing fashion. One word, spoken by Froome, summed up his Cup Finals Series with Klotz. "Unstoppable!"

Warren Klotz hit shots from all over the playing surface, in the Cup Final, also gaining from some always crucial puck luck that can only be attributed to confidence. A confidence that grew greater and greater as the playoffs played on. A couple of well executed fintars. A RW shot that hit top corner short side. LW set ups high and low. RW set ups high and low. D shots that were timed perfectly with turnovers. The bounces were with him, too, as Klotz forged a playoff friendship with the puck that nobody could impede or top. Today was the best Stiga I've ever seen Warren Klotz play since the 2004 King Of Table Hockey Tournament. (My first year on the job as the VTHC beat reporter!)

The 2012 VTHC season has been a success in finding solid new players and in seeing a new group develop their Stiga skills in rapid succession moving forward. Paul Lobley comes to mind in describing a player that has endured many losses to improve his game. Paul is a likely candidate for this year's VTHC "Players Choice" Award for 2012. Two more votes to be tallied to make it official.

Steve Crawford, down 2 games to 0 early in the Quarter Finals against Lobley, had to rattle off four straight victories to end Paul's near impossible task of hoisting the VTHC Cup in 2012. Crawford's TH experience won the series but Paul showed he's developing a Stiga game that has a variety of skilled attacks to draw from. Paul's going to be trouble for the top of the VTHC heap, in 2013, if he continues his Stiga ways. (Likely.)

Harvey Yee made his return to the VTHC with a first round sweep of 2012 VTHC rookie Chris Dranfield. Yee would run into Klotz in the Semi Finals. A very abrupt dead end road in these 2012 VTHC playoffs! Harvey also won the third place series, against Steve Crawford, winning the best of three in two straight games. Here were the series results on the day:

2012 VTHC Quarter Finals: (Best of 7.)

4)Harvey Yee (13-23-0) versus 9)Chris Dranfield (2-9-1).
Harvey 5-0, Harvey 3-1, Harvey 6-1, Harvey 3-2OT. (Yee wins 4 games to 0.)

5)Steve Crawford (12-22-2) versus 8)Paul Lobley (5-30-1).
Paul 2-1OT, Paul 2-1, Steve 3-1, Steve 5-3, Steve 4-3OT, Steve 3-1. (Crawford wins 4 games to 2.)

2012 VTHC Semi Finals: (Best of 7.)
1)Dominic Froome (62-17-5) versus 5)Steve Crawford (12-22-2).
Dom 3-0, Dom 3-0, Dom 5-1, Dom 7-2. (Froome wins 4 games to 0.)

2)Warren Klotz (55-24-5) versus 4)Harvey Yee. (13-23-0)
Warren 3-2, Warren 5-2, Warren 6-2, Warren 3-2. (Klotz wins 4 games to 0.)

Third Place Series: (Best of 3.)
4)Harvey Yee (13-23-0) versus 5)Steve Crawford (12-22-2).
Harvey 5-2, Harvey 1-0. (Yee wins series 2 games to 0.)

2012 VTHC Cup Finals. (Best of 7.)
1)Dominic Froome (62-17-5) versus 2)Warren Klotz (55-24-5).
Warren 7-2, Warren 5-4, Warren 6-3, Warren 8-3. (Klotz wins the 2012 VTHC Cup 4 games to 0.)

A big congratulations to Warren from all of the members of the Vancouver Table Hockey Club! More to follow to recap the 2012 season, soon, as well as the future of the VTHC in 2013.
